DDR Zeit...

refers to the times in East Germany before the wall came down.  Our German exchange student from Dresden, who was 12 when his world changed, would frequently start conversations with "In DDR times..."

This place and time after world war II until 1986 makes a unique and interesting venue for collecting.  The poverty and chaos of the war combined with the problems of communism meant hard times for many people.  Clever and talented people found ways to make items for sale from scraps and castoffs.  The necessities of the times combined with a history of producing quality products resulted in many handcrafted items being produced.  Many were sold under the Expertic label to produce hard currency. 

We hope to develop this site into a place where products, pictures and publications from that time can be displayed.  We are also working on a site to display items from the Erzgebirge Region which has an especially long history of making wooden handcrafted items.
